We Found Da Gold

One night, while sitting around at a crawfish happy hour, my friends and I decided it'd be funny to enter the St. Patrick's Day parade on Greenville. After a little research and less than 2 weeks for preparation, we signed ourselves up to be on our own personal float just for fun. Our theme was "Where Da Gold at?" modeled after the newscast video that came out of Crichton, Alabama in 2006 and was soon followed by a remix video/song. In this video, the town is up in arms about a leprechaun who has taken up residence in a local tree. The townspeople have three theories:

1. "It's casting a shadow from the other limb."

2. "Could be a crack head that got holt of the wrong stuff and it told him to get up in the tree and play a leprechaun."

3. Who cares. "I'm gonna run a back hoe and uproot that tree. I wanna know where da gold at. I want the gold. Gimme the gold. I want the gold."

Please...if you have not seen the video, or it's beena while - refresh yourself now:

Anyway, the 'float' just started out as a 20 foot flat bed trailer that Kacy's dad let us borrow. We bought lots of supplies to turn this into a 'Goldmine on Wheels.'

We wanted our float to be covered in gold and to have it 'raining' gold from the chicken writing at the top. It was without a doubt that it was necessary for us to have a tree with a leprechaun in it, a poster-sized drawing of the amateur sketch, and generator-powered speakers playing the song over and over and over and over...

...and let's not forget about the gold rims. As I was searching in Party City for an asinine amount of gold decor, I found these wonderful serving platters that double as some pretty sweet wheels. Who knew it'd be a perfect fit?!?!

The wind was brutal and we lost some gold along the route, but you still get the point with the music and the poster. Some people would read the poster and you could see their lips saying "crackhead" but they didn't get it. And SOME people didn't even have to read it and just saw the amateur sketch and started BUSTING OUT laughing. One lady in the crowd was laughing so hard she was doubled over. It was funny! I found one guy who was actually wearing the amateur sketch t-shirt, so he got some beads. We got lots of thumbs up and laughs from the people who understood. It ROCKED!!!

We had a total of 30 people with us today. Honorary leaders were my dad and Ray, Kacy's dad. They stayed out in front and made sure no one was run over by mistake. Both were dressed hideously (thanks to Kacy and me,) but everyone kept asking my dad where he got his shoes. After walking the whole parade, Daddy's shoes were 'toe up." He called it his 'toe cleavage.' Ray was gracious to the little ones and passed out fake $100 bills to the kids on the side. Real ghetto-like.

As always, Michael was quite the crowd pleaser. Not only was he dressed like an idiot (which we all loved,) performing Irish jigs, charming the young ladies and getting his picture taken...he was also tracked down by some Mexican news stations. Little did we know until 9:00 that night, he'd actually be on an accredited news broadcast.

Click the link below to see him. He’s the guy at the beginning say (in a fake Irish accent), "It’s a fabulous day! It’s a great day for the Irish, I say." Thanks Fox 4! http://www.myfoxdfw.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?contentId=6042372&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=1.1.1

Brother Mark so GRACIOUSLY drove the truck. Being the driver, he didn't get to drink as much as the rest of us, or partake in the float festivities, so it wasn't as much for him. He took the job real seriously though in this chauffuer outfit, and earned himself a spot on the back of the float next year.

Not quite in full force, but almost was the Stanga Train. Both the boys, Abby, Dad and me couldn't pass up this good time.

I did a performance or two, and invited Kacy do 'jump in.' When my longest strand of beads broke, what else was I to do?

A lot of creativity went into some of the costumes, and the crowd seemed to love it! Word.

To keep it in true gangsta style, we did add a few additional songs to our mix, such as:

Make It Rain - Where we threw out hundred dolla bills, yo

Low (Apple Bottom Jeans, Boot With The Furrrrrr) - Thanks Nikki for finding that sweet Abble Bottom get up.

Robyn, Kacy, and I (with a lot of help from Trey,) actually pulled it off. With 3 girls orchestrating a project in less than 2 weeks on a very limited budget - we're quite proud of ourselves. Everyone seemed to have a great time!

Also, Kacy took some sweet video clips.

Saturday was definitely an amazing day. Everything went well and everyone had a great time. Although, we did learn quite a bit, so next year we've got a few revisions.
